FROM COLLAGE TO MUSIC

The word "collage" literally means "to paste". Today this term is defined as any product made by gluing on a flat surface a layer made by sticking together elements, even different, such as newspaper, wallpaper, illustrations, pictures or fabric. As artistic technique, the collage offers an almost inexhaustible expressive freedom through the use of unusual materials. It represents a significant moment of art, with the desire for a recovery of materiality and the aspiration to give back to art its own physical connotation; in short, collage is a call and a link to the object reality, to its concreteness, to its materials. 

But collage is also knowledge. The use of a concrete material to be modified manually and the relative simplicity of the realization operations (choice, cutting, composition and gluing), obliges us to observe the detail and concentrate on the essence, material, but also on the conscious expression of emotions, which transmits the defragmented image to us. A similar situation happens when we listen to a piece of music and we focus our attention on a single instrument, on the passage of a melody or on the feeling that that specific combination of elements arouses in us.

ABOUT TEXTURE

In musical terms texture is the segment of register of a part of a composition (or an instrument, or a voice). But music, as language, is also a game and we can probably say the same about this photographic collage compositions that emphasises the process of construction and abstraction in the image, the texture itself but this time translated in visual terms. 

Collage here is a mean to highlight and play on some aspect of the musical world, but music is not only made by instruments or notes but also by its players, its listeners and its interprets, so this idea of texture, complexity and combination linked to music also involves a human participation and involvement. At the end, the importance of the texture in giving an object the sense of depth regardless of other conditions, is reflected in both musical collages and human textures.
